Wilfred Eric Steiner

Wilfred Eric Steiner is a litigator specializing in the areas of corporate litigation, business torts and international arbitration. Mr. Steiner has extensive experience litigating breach of trade secrets, confidentiality agreements, and unfair competition, and has argued these and other cases in courts around the country and the globe.

Mr. Steiner graduated from the University of Michigan at Dearborn in 1994 with a dual bachelor of arts with distinction in History and Political Science, and a minor in International Relations. Mr. Steiner graduated from Wayne State Law School in 1998. While in law school, Mr. Steiner was a finalist for the Donald E. Barris Litigation Award and the director and captain of the National Student Trial Advocacy Team. Mr. Steiner was selected as an International Law Fellow by the University of Warwick, in Warwick, England, and also attended the University of Notre Dame – London Law Centre as an international scholar.

Mr. Steiner was elected representative to the State Bar of Michigan – Young Lawyers Section, and was appointed the Young Lawyers Division’s representative on the committee for international law by the American Bar Association. Mr. Steiner has also published articles on developing issues in various legal journals.  Mr. Steiner has served as presiding judge for the Michigan High School Mock Trial Tournament for several years, and acted as moderator for the United States District Court "New Attorneys" seminar. Recently, Mr. Steiner was asked to serve as a Guest Lecturer for the Center for International Legal Studies in Salzburg, Austria.

Mr. Steiner is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the American Bar Association, and is a member of the sections on litigation and international law. He has been admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and Western District of Michigan, the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Steiner has extensive experience in various areas of practice.  Some of the more notable matters Mr. Steiner has handled include:

  • Pursued international litigation in Germany of a complex commercial dispute involving specialized technical products.
     
  • Acted as an expert to a Costa Rican corporation and national regarding jurisdictional issues related to enforcement of a United States judgment in Costa Rica.
     
  • Prosecuted an action against a Mexican entity regarding the importation of regulated hardware, including the successful application of Federal "long-arm" jurisdiction.
     
  • Perfected international service of process under the Hague Convention and conducted discovery in Mexico, Germany, Costa Rica, the United Kingdom and Italy, as well as throughout the United States.
     
  • Counseled a domestic corporation regarding a United States Customs regulations and import violation.
     
  • Prosecuted a theft of trade secrets case involving chemical solutions against a former employee and a competing corporation.
     
  • Litigated a breach of fiduciary duties claim by a managing partner of an enterprise on behalf of the other partners.
     
  • Acted as North American counsel to a Chinese company entering the domestic market.
     
  • Argued in the Michigan Court of Appeals involving the financial aspects of a fraud and failure to disclose assets in a divorce action.
     
  • Made application to the Michigan Supreme Court for an appeal based upon a bank's wrongful termination of a financing agreement.
